Florida State Mid Am: Carter Takes Medalist Honors

Windermere, Florida (October 7, 2005) -- After 36-holes of stroke play qualifying, Steve Carter earned medalist honors to capture the number one seed going into the match play portion of the 2005 Mid-Amateur Championship. Match play begins Saturday, October 8 with the finals Sunday, October 9 at The Golden Bear Club at Keene’s Pointe in Orlando.

Defending Champion, Steve Carter, of Jacksonville, fired a pair of 70’s to take top honors. Carter will face James Weick, of Fort Lauderdale, in the first round. Last year at Sawgrass Country Club, Carter shot a 72-67-74—213 to win after the Championship was shortened due to the hurricanes. Scott Smith, of Ponte Vedra Beach, posted a 70-71—141 for the second seed and will play Pete Leveille, of Orlando, in the first round of match play. Bret Voisin, of Orlando, Ken Moody, of Ponte Vedra Beach, and Jon Veneziano, of Mount Dora, each finished stroke play with a 2-under par 142 and are seeded 3,4, and 5 respectively.

The first round of match play begins at 7:30 am on Saturday, October 8 with the quarterfinals starting at 1:00 pm. The semifinals and finals will be played on Sunday, October 9. After nine qualifiers across the state, 90 players advanced to the Championship at Keene’s Pointe. The Championship consists of 36-holes of stroke play qualifying over the first two days with the lowest 16 advancing to the match play on Saturday and Sunday. To be eligible for the State Mid-Amateur, participants must be 25 years of age or older as of October 6, 2005.
