John Hayt Collegiate: Central Florida leads team competition
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 26, 2012) -- The University of Central Florida leads the team competition after firing a round of 294 (+6) on day one. The Knights hold a one stroke advantage on Tennessee (295).

Coastal Carolina is third at 296 followed by North Texas (298), LSU (298), Arkansas (299), North Florida, Ole Miss (300), Jacksonville (300), TCU (300), Tulsa (304), Furman (306), UAB (307), Mercer (309) and Georgia Southern (316).

LSU's Sang Yi fired the low round of the day, 67 (-5) to lead in the medalist competition. The TCU duo of Julien Bren and Johan de Beer along with Coastal's Sebastian Soderberg are just one shot behind Yi.

No. 13-ranked North Florida carded an opening round 300 in cool and windy conditions Sunday to rank tied for seventh at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational played at Sawgrass Country Club. The Opsreys, the host team of the event, feature a pair of players in the Top 20 as junior Kevin Phelan is tied for 12th after posting a first round 73 (+1) and senior Kevin Aylwin finished tied for 16th with a two-over 74. Junior Sean Dale, ranked 9th in national rankings, bounced back from a sluggish start to fire a three-over 75 (T-24th).

Freshman MJ Maguire is tied for 49th (78) and junior Pete Kellerman is tied for 57th (79) to round out the UNF lineup. In addition, a quartet of Osprey linksters competed as individuals in the event including Joey Petronio (78/ T-49th), Brant DeLongy (80/ T-67th), Joe Byun (81/ T-72nd) and Joey Marino (91/ 86th).

“We had a mixed bag of results today,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder.

“We got off to a slow start this morning then seemed to turn things around in the middle of the round playing well for a stretch of 7-8 holes. I think we even shared the lead at one point. Unfortunately, we struggled to finish the round strong and leave ourselves a little work to do. We are still in a good position if we can play a bit more consistently. Kevin Phelan had a solid round with 15 pars and Kevin Aylwin also played well for most of the day. Tournament action continues with second round play. North Florida will be paired with Ole Miss and TCU starting at 8 a.m. from the first tee. The event is open to the public with free admission
