Loftsson Wins Cardinal Amateur

GREENSBORO, NC (Aug. 14, 2011) - Charlotte 49ers rising senior Olafur Loftsson won the Cardinal Amateur at the Cardinal Golf and Country Club in Greensboro, NC. by four strokes. With the victory, Loftsson earns an invitation to this week's PGA Wyndham Championship.

Loftsson trailed leader Will Collins by one stroke entering the final round but fired a five-under par 65 while Collins shot even-par 70, giving Loftsson his four-stroke margin.

Loftsson finished the 54-hole event at 11-under par following rounds of 65, 69, 65 on the par-70 course. Collins and Matt Nagy finished tied for second at 7-under par.

Loftsson earned all-Atlantic 10 honors this past year for the 49ers with his sixth-place finish at the league championships. He helped the 49ers to their league-record sixth straight A-10 title and school-record seventh straight NCAA Tournament bid.

Last fall, Loftsson competed at the World Amateur Team Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina for his native Iceland. 

Loftsson joins Trevor Murphy (2008 Wachovia Championship) as recent 49ers who qualified for PGA Tour events while competing collegiately for the 49ers.
