LEICESTERSHIRE, ENGLAND (September 1, 2005) -- Thirty-Two club golfers from across the United Kingdom will go head to head to compete in the 2005 HSBC Amateur Match Play Championship at Stapleford Park, Leicestershire on September 3rd and 4th; an event that is an amateur version of the HSBC World Match Play Championship at Wentworth from September 15th – 18th.

The 32 competitors are amongst the top 16 ladies and men from the 200 clubs that HSBC supported in their monthly medal competitions which took place from May to August. These players displayed the high standard of golf that inspired HSBC to create the Amateur Match Play Championship in 2004.

With the event providing all the tension and experiences of its professional counterpart, the HSBC World Match Play Championship, the finalists will need to display the high levels of concentration, skill and match play thinking seen in the world's leading athletes to take the title of HSBC Amateur Match Play Champion 2005.

With this title will also come the opportunity to play at the Wentworth Club during the HSBC World Match Play Championship week in what could only be described as a battle of the sexes, continuing the age-old discussion as to whether women are of equal skill and capability on the golf course.

About the HSBC Amateur Match Play Championship

HSBC was inspired to create the Amateur Match Play Championship in 2004 as a result of its program to support golf at all levels. This has enabled HSBC to develop a relationship with all levels of golfers from junior through amateur to the elite professional game.

The second year of the HSBC Amateur Match Play has seen an increase in club participation of 100% with an additional 100 clubs participating in this year's competition, as well as an extension of the program to include a new competition for women.

Clubs are invited to take part in the amateur match play competition free of charge and it is open to both the men's and ladies section of the clubs with all entrants being guaranteed of a prize. To recognise the efforts of the club competition organisers HSBC provides tickets to the HSBC World Match Play Championship at Wentworth Club, September 15 – 18.

The top 16 scorers from the monthly medal competition qualify for the final, a luxury weekend at Stapleford Park, Leistershire, where they compete in a match play knock-out tournament that adopts the same rules as the prestigious HSBC World Match Play Championship at Wentworth Club.
