SCGA Mid Am: McClure Leads after 2 Rounds

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, (August 29, 2005) -- John McClure of Austin, Tex., fired a 4-under-par 68 early this afternoon and watched it stand up for a one-shot lead after 36 holes in the 22nd Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) Mid-Amateur Championship at North Ranch Country Club.

The 46-year-old McClure, who belongs to The Los Angeles CC, The Palms GC and The Plantation GC, had a 2-over-par 73 over the Lakes/Valley combination in his morning round and was one of two golfers to shoot 68 over the Lakes/Oaks combo under sweltering skies this afternoon.

His total of 141, 2 under par, is one shot ahead of David Ober of Riverside, who totaled 73-69 --142 for his two rounds, and Todd Strible of San Marcos, who posted rounds of 69-73.

First-round leaders Greg Lopez of San Clemente and San Diego State golfer Joshua Warthen of Pismo Beach, each of whom shot 3-under-par 68s in the morning, slipped to 3-over-par 75s in the afternoon and finished at even-par 143. They were among a group of seven that included 1987 champion (and UCSB golf coach) Steve Lass of Santa Barbara and Mark Gardner of Redlands, who also shot 68 this afternoon.
