Women's Southern Am: Nielson medals
ATLANTA, Georgia (June 6, 2011) -- It was hot in Atlanta but nothing could cool off Calle Nielson from the University of Virginia and Nashville, Tennessee as she finished the qualifying round at one under par 70, two strokes better than all other competitors.
Nielson had a bogey on the fifth hole followed by a birdie on the par three seventh hole to make the turn at even par. She had two birdies and one bogey on the back nine.
Hannah Collier from the University of Alabama came in with a one over par 71. Six players finished at 72 and the low thirty two championship flight included all the competitors who shot 79 or better.
Michaela Owen shot 75 to earn Junior Medalist honors. Taffy Brower, the 2004 WSGA Champion and Leslie Henry from Addison, Texas tied for Senior Medalist at 78.
Defending champion, Ashley Lance of Franklin, Tenn. shot 78.
