Texas (TGA) Public Links Championship: Miskell Medals with 64

SAN ANTONIO, TX (June 2, 2011) -- The conditions couldn’t have been any more favorable for low scores during the opening round of the State Public Links Championship which is being held at Brackenridge Park Golf Course in San Antonio, TX. Minimal wind and warm temperatures set the stage for twenty players to find themselves under par after the completion of the stroke play qualifying round of the Public Links Championship. After a 7 for 4 man playoff, thirty-two men have qualified for tomorrow’s match play portion of the championship.

Terrence Miskell, the 2007 Public Links Champion, claimed the medalist honors after firing a seven-under-par, 64. Miskell’s sixty-four was one better than the two-time defending San Antonio Junior City Amateur champ, Andrew Carreon, who posted a six-under-par,65. Miskell started with three birdies and a lone bogey on his opening nine before catching fire and posting a thirty on the back nine which included three birdies and an eagle. Carreon’s bogey free round included four birdies and an eagle. After a stroke play qualifying cut of 73 (+2), thirty-two men find themselves changing gears to prepare for tomorrow’s match play portion of the championship at the historic Brackenridge Park Golf Course.

The State Public Links is scheduled for 18 holes of stroke play qualifying on Thursday, June 2, with the low 32 players advancing to the match play portion of the championship. First and second round matches will be played on Friday. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played Saturday, with the finals on Sunday.

Entries are open to male amateur golfers who are members of the Texas Golf Association, are residents of the state of Texas, and have a USGA Handicap Index of 8.4 or less. Additionally, all applicants must meet the USGA definition of a public golfer (i.e., applicants may not have held privileges of any course that does not extend playing privileges to the general public, or privileges of any private club maintaining its own course as of January 1, 2011).
