Connecticut Women's Open: Caron takes lead

OXFORD, Conn. (May 31, 2011) -- Elizabeth Caron from Greenwich, Conn. and Rockrimmon Country Club (CT) shot an even par round of 72 to take the first round lead in the 13th Connecticut Women’s Open at the Golf Club at Oxford Greens in Oxford, Conn.

Caron, a four time Conn. Women’s Open champion and former LPGA tour player, finished her round with seven birdies, including three consecutive birdies from the eighth to tenth hole. Caron will be seeking her first title since 2006 and her second Conn. Women’s Open title as a professional.

Caron will be paired with 2007 Connecticut Women’s Open champion Sue Ginter from Ridgefield, Conn. and Rolling Hills Country Club (CT). After a double bogey on three and bogey on four, Ginter made only one bogey and one birdie to post a two over par round of 74. The final player in the last group will be Jordan Lintz from Milford, Conn. and Great River Golf Club (CT) who came out of the gate early to post a three over par round of 75.

Two other former champions are only a couple shots back in search of their second Women’s Open victory. Lynn Valentine, a resident of East Lyme, Conn. and teaching professional at Fresh Meadow Country Club (NY), shot an opening round 76 and CJ Reeves, the 2009 champion from Bedford, NY and Century Country Club (NY), posted a 77.

Amateur Sarah Sideranko of New Britain, Conn had the low round for an amateur of 76 and is four off the lead.

The final round will begin tomorrow Wednesday, June 1st at 8:00am at the Golf Club at Oxford Greens with the leaders teeing off at 11:40am.
