Georgia Mid-Am: Hamilton takes 1st-round lead
VALDOSTA, Ga. (May 20, 2011) -- Greg Hamilton of Atlanta fired a 3-under-par 69 (36-33) in the opening round of the 30th annual Georgia Mid-Amateur Championship to lead all others at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club. Hamilton carded birdies on holes two, four, six, 11, 15 and 17, with bogeys on one, three and five.

Hamilton holds a one-stroke lead over a pair of players in Dave Poteet of Suwanee and Woodstock’s Mark Strickland. Poteet turned in a 2-under-par 70 (35-35) scorecard with three birdies and one bogey. Strickland’s score of 70 (34-36) came via six birdies, two bogeys and a double-bogey.

Three other players finished round one in red numbers as Jeff Knox of Augusta (35-36=71), Suwanee’s Donny Phillips, Jr., (35-36=71) and Cason Hammock of Columbus (37-34=71) will tee off the second round two strokes back.

The Georgia Mid-Amateur Championship will resume at 8:00 a.m. Saturday. After 36 holes, the field will be cut to the low 40 and ties for Sunday’s final round.

Entries: Open to male amateur golfers age 25 or older as of the first day of the championship

Field: 144 players; non-exempt players enter through one of seven statewide 18-hole qualifiers

Format: 54 holes of stroke play; field cut to the low 70 and ties after 36 holes
