WATSONVILLE, Calif. (May 2, 2011) -- Capitola's Sean Dyer finally broke through to win the Apple City Amateur on Sunday at Spring Hills Golf Course in Watsonville.
Dyer, 30, shot a 2-under-par 69 in the second and final round to win by three strokes. He sat in a four-way tie for second after firing a 74 at Pajaro Valley Golf Club in the first round Saturday.
Last year, Dyer held the first round lead, only to struggle down the stretch and finish third behind back-to-back winner Greg Auer. This time, Dyer played steady, carding birdies on hole Nos. 6, 9, 16 and 18 with just two bogeys on the day.
Dyer said this was the third straight year he entered the final round playing in the leaders' group.
