Notre Dame takes Round 2 lead at Big East Championship
PALM HARBOR, Fla. (April 18, 2011) -- The Notre Dame men and women both lead after two rounds of play at the 2011 BIG EAST Golf Championships held at Innisbrook Golf & Spa Resort in Palm Harbor, Fla. The Irish women own a commanding 18-stroke advantage over second-place Louisville. The men’s side leads by seven strokes over the Cardinals with one round remaining. After shooting a 295 in the first round of the championship on Sunday, the Irish followed that by carding 297 on Monday. The 297 was the best score for any team in the second round. The Irish have three players in the top three of the individual leaderboard. Freshman Kristina Nhim leads the Irish after shooting even par 72 in the second round to total 145 through two rounds. She is in second place, three strokes off the lead. First round leader junior Becca Huffer sits tied for third with senior teammate So-Hyun Park with a two round total of 148. Louisville moved into second place by shooting 302 in the second round for a total of 610. The Cardinals, who are 18 strokes behind Notre Dame, are led by sophomore Anna-Karin Ljungstrom, who is tied for third with a score of 148. Ljungstrom fired a 72 in the second round. Georgetown is in third place with a two-round total of 623. USF sits fourth with a score of 625. Individually, St. John’s freshman Harin Lee had a record-setting day to take over first place. Lee shot a three-under par 69, tying for the second lowest single-round score in the history of the BIG EAST Women’s Golf Championship. Lee eagled the par-five second hole, and recorded two birdies with just one bogey. Combined with her 73 in round one, Lee has a two-round total of 142, the lowest 36-hole score in BIG EAST Women’s Golf Championship history. She is two-under par and holds a three-stroke advantage heading into the final round. On the men’s side, Notre Dame grabbed a seven-stroke lead heading into the final round of play after carding 290 in the second round for two-day total of 583. The Irish gained some separation from the Cardinals after being tied following the first round thanks in part to junior Max Scodro. Scodro pulled into a three-way tie for first-place after firing a 73 for a two-day total of one-over par (143). He held a one-shot advantage until recording a bogey on the 16th hole. The junior is tied with freshman teammate Niall Platt and Louisville senior Karsten Clements. Platt shot a 71, which was tied with four other players for the best second-round score. Louisville shot a 297 in the second round, giving the Cardinals a two-round total of 590. Clements was one of three Cardinals to shoot a 74 in the second round. Villanova had the second-best team score in the second round with a 293 to pull into third-place with a total of 594, four strokes out of second place. Senior Conor Casey, shot a 71 to tie for fifth with a two-round total of 145. Senior Brendan Kelly fired a 72 and sophomore Michael Kania carded 73 for the Wildcats in the second round. Spots four through 11 in the team standings are separated by just six strokes. USF is in fourth with a total of 602, while Georgetown is in 11th with a score of 608. Other notables include Cincinnati senior Joe Kastelic, who is in fourth with a two-round total of 144, one-stroke behind the leaders. Final round action begins Tuesday at 8 a.m. Eastern.
