Steve Liebler Takes 2nd Mid-Am Title

SPARTANBURG, SC (Oct. 10, 2010) - Steve Liebler, of Irmo, lurked closely behind the first and second round leaders following Friday and Saturday’s play. On Sunday afternoon, Mr. Consistent held true to form as he shot even par to claim the 2010 SCGA Mid Amateur Championship at the historic Country Club of Spartanburg.

Liebler entered the final day tied with first round leader Rick Cloninger at eight under par just one shot off the lead behind Columbia’s Jarrett Grimes. Grimes struggled out of the gate bogeying two of the first five holes while Cloninger birdie two of first five. All the while, Liebler birdied the par five fifth to stay within a shot of the lead. Grimes’ continued to have problems and finished the front nine four over par and five under for the tournament. Cloninger also stumbled with a four putt double bogey on the par three eighth and followed with a bogey five on the ninth. Liebler also bogeyed the ninth which allowed for a slim one shot lead over Cloninger and three shot advantage over Grimes heading to the final nine.

An even par back nine with a birdie on 17 and bogey on 18 is all Liebler needed to secure the Championship at a solid eight under par 208. This was his second SCGA Mid Amateur title repeating the feat from 2006 which was held at Greenville’s Green Valley Country Club. Grimes and Cloninger finished locked up tied for second at six under par 210 after neither could sustain a substantial threat to Liebler.

It took a score of nine over 153 to make the cut to the low 60 players and ties which resulted in a final round field of 68 players vying for the title.

The 2010 SCGA Mid-Amateur Championship was played on the par 72 ~ 6,504 yard Country Club of Spartanburg golf course in Spartanburg, SC. The field consisted of 120 individuals playing 54 holes of stroke play and was cut to the low 60 and ties after the second round.
