LONG BEACH, Calif. (July 11, 2010) -- Derek Zellmer got off to a blazing start in Sunday's final round of the Long Beach City Men's Golf Championship and rode that momentum all the way to the tournament championship.
Zellmer, who shared the 36-hole lead, birdied the first four holes and six of the first seven Sunday at Skylinks Golf Course. He shot a blazing 5-under-par 31 on the front nine and finished at 4-under 68 for a three-round total of 202 to win the Championship Flight, four shots better than Andrew Gunson and Travis Johnson.
"I made a couple putts, made a couple shots ..." said Zellmer, 25, who lives in Huntington Beach. "It wasn't really complicated."
Carter Pool, who shared the lead with Zellmer entering the final round, shot 73 and finished fourth at 209. Kennneth McCready shot 69 and finished fifth at 210.
In A Flight, Jeff Ronk beat Steve Shiro by three shots at 224. B Flight was won by Joe De La Fuente at 235, three shots better than Andrew Lux.
Shad McFadden won C Flight by seven strokes at 235. D Flight was won by John Moore in a one-hole playoff with Peter Pellizzon. Both shot 244 for 54 holes.
Sau Kweng Tan shot 256 and held off Mark Ammerman by one shot in E Flight. Nick Eliades won F Flight after a two-hole playoff with Ron Hansen.
