Tucker Wins North Carolina Mid-Am by 2

ASHEBORO, NC (September 20, 2009)--Final round results of the 16th North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by Pinewood Country Club in Asheboro, NC on Sunday, September 20, 2009 (Par 36-35—71, 6750 yards, Rating 73.1/133).

Paul Tucker, 30, of Waxhaw, NC fired a final round four-under par 67 to win the 16th North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship by two strokes over Sherrill Britt of West End, NC and Paul Simson of Raleigh, NC.

Tucker, who works in the family lumber business, played in the second to last group in front of the leaders. A hot start with a front nine four-under par 32 vaulted him into the lead which he held or shared for the remainder of the round.

“I putted really well today,” Tucker stated on his key to winning. “You had to put the ball in the right place on these putting greens.”

After a bogey on the 17th hole, Tucker fell into a tie for the lead with Simson at seven-under par. “I tried to remain positive and hit two good shots to the green to make birdie. But I made a solid par. All I could do at this point was wait to see what happened”, Tucker said.

Simson needed a par on the par 4 18th hole and defending champion Uly Grisette of Clemmons, NC needed a birdie to force a playoff but both player’s second shots found the greenside bunker which ultimately led to double bogey six’s for Simson and Grisette.

Britt had chances to join the leaders but nine straight pars on the back nine was not enough to catch Tucker.

“I feel exited, speechless and humble at the same time”, Tucker noted about his first CGA major championship title.

The top 30 scores and ties are exempt into the 2010 North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship.

This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association which is celebrating its 100th year of serving amateur golf in the Carolinas.

ABOUT THE North Carolina Mid-Amateur

North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 30th birthday, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 5.4. Sectional qualifying is required in the weeks before the championship unless exemption criteria is met. 54-hole stroke play event with a cut to the low 60 and ties after 36 holes.
