CYPRESS, TX (August 9, 2009)--Today’s round was plagued with multiple suspensions caused by rain and lightning in the area. Out of the 84 players who began play this morning, there were 30 players who withdrew due to the weather.
Heading into the final round three players stood atop the South Amateur leader board, Michael Whitehead of Sugar Land, David Pocknall of Katy and Kip Guidry of Missouri City. However at the end of the final round there would be only one player left at the top. Michael Whitehead would not be denied his second South Amateur Championship title.
Michael came out firing right from the start with birdies on holes 3, 5 and 7 on his way to stellar a front nine score of 33. Whitehead’s front nine score gave him a 5 stroke lead over both Pocknall and Guidry with only nine holes to play.
Whitehead never looked back and played error free golf coming home shooting one over par 37 on the final nine. His two under par 70 in the final round put him six strokes ahead of his nearest competitor Kip Guidry and allowed him to capture his second South Amateur in 3 years.
Kip Guidry hung on to capture solo second place by firing a final round four over par 76. David Pocknall once again found himself in the hunt but just couldn’t catch up to Whitehead. Pocknall birdied holes 7 and 18 but his double on 5 didn’t help the cause. Pocknall finished tied for third with The Woodland’s Owen Joyner. Joyner has been consistent all week with rounds of 72, 73 and yet another 73.
The South Amateur was the final regional championship of the 2009 season. Many of the players in the field will be tuning up their games for the State Mid-Amateur in September.
