Tringale, Uihlein Named to U.S. Walker Cup Team

Far Hills, N.J. (Aug. 30) – Cameron Tringale, 22, of Laguna Niguel, Calif., and Peter Uihlein, 20, of Orlando, Fla., have been named to the 2009 USA Walker Cup Team by the International Team Selection Committee of the United States Golf Association.

Tringale and Uihlein are the final two players selected to the USA Team that will compete against 10 amateurs representing Great Britain and Ireland in the 42nd Walker Cup Match, to be played Sept. 12-13 at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.

Tim Jackson, 50, of Germantown, Tenn., has been named as the first alternate for the team. Ben Martin, 22, of Greenwood, S.C., will be the second alternate.

The eight players previously named to the USA Team on Aug. 9 are Bud Cauley, Rickie Fowler, Brendan Gielow, Brian Harman, Morgan Hoffmann, Adam Mitchell, Nathan Smith and Drew Weaver. The captain of the USA Team is George “Buddy” Marucci Jr.

The USA Team has won the last two Matches, posting one-point victories at Chicago (Ill.) Golf Club in 2005 and at Royal County Down in Newcastle, Ireland, in 2007. The USA leads the series overall, 33-7-1.

For the first time, the Walker Cup Match will comprise 18 singles matches and eight foursomes (alternate shot) matches in 2009. Ten singles matches will be played on Sunday.

This change marks only the second time in the 87-year history of the Walker Cup that the format has been altered.

From 1963 to 2007, the Match comprised 16 singles matches and eight foursomes matches. From 1922 to 1961, the Match comprised four foursomes matches on the first day of play and eight singles matches on the second day of play.

The ten United States Walker Cup team members are:

Bud Cauley, 19, of Jacksonville, Fla.

Rickie Fowler, 20, of Murrieta, Calif.

Brendan Gielow, 21, of Muskegon, Mich.

Brian Harman, 22, of Savannah, Ga.

Morgan Hoffmann, 19, of Saddle Brook, N.J.

Adam Mitchell, 22, of Chattanooga, Tenn.

Nathan Smith, 30, of Pittsburgh, Pa.

Cameron Tringale, 22, of Laguna Niguel, CA.

Peter Uihlein, 20, of Orlando, FL.

Drew Weaver, 22, of High Point, N.C.

The captain of the USA Team is George “Buddy” Marucci Jr.,57, of Villanova, Pa., a playing member of the 1995 and 1997 USA Teams, as well as the captain of the victorious 2007 USA Team at Royal County Down in Newcastle, Ireland. Marucci is the reigning USGA Senior Amateur champion, though he will not be able to defend his 2008 title due to a scheduling conflict with the Walker Cup Match.

ABOUT THE The Walker Cup

The Walker Cup Match is a biennial 10-man amateur team competition between the USA and a team composed of players from Great Britain and Ireland and selected by The R&A. It is played over two days with 18 singles matches and eight foursomes (alternate-shot) matches.

The first United States Walker Cup Team, which in 1922 defeated the GB&I side, 8-4, at the National Golf Links of America, is considered among the best teams ever and included Francis Ouimet, Bob Jones, Charles “Chick” Evans and Jess Sweetser. Many of the game’s greatest players have taken part in Walker Cup competition, including U.S. Open champions Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth for the USA and Graeme McDowell, Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose for Great Britain and Ireland.
