(Sept. 24, 2008) – The team of Ginny Burkey from Fircrest, Wash. and Loree McKay of Portland, Ore. outlasted Karen Darrington of Boise, Idaho and PNGA Hall of Famer, Jean Smith of Eagle, Idaho in a playoff to win the 26th PNGA Women’s Senior Team Championship held at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.
Both teams finished the championship at 4-under par 211. Darrington and Smith lead the championship by four strokes after two rounds of play. Their lead was diminished after Burkey and McKay carded the low round of the day in the four-ball stroke play format with a 4-under par 68.
The playoff was taken to the #10 tee on the Cascade Course at Gold Mountain Golf Club. Burkey and McKay won the first hole with a par, claiming the 2008 championship.
The PNGA Women’s Senior Team consisted of 54-hole stroke play, gross and net competitions, two-person teams (Chapman, scramble, and four-ball formats used one round each).
In the chapman (round one), both players on the team tee off, then they switch balls. Player A plays Player B's drive, and vice-versa. Each player plays her second shot, then select the best of the second shots, and from that point until the ball is holed they play only one ball into the hole.
In the scramble (round two), each partner tees off from the teeing ground. Then, the best shot is selected and each partner plays from that spot. This is continued until the ball is holed out.
In the four-ball (round three), each partner plays their own ball. The lower of the partners’ scores is the score for the hole.
