José Cristóbal Islas records a big win at the Mexican National Amateur
Overcoming typical final-round nerves, José Cristóbal Islas from Hidalgo reached a total of 10-under par and won the Mexican National Amateur Championship by 10 strokes.
The 20-year-old delivered a final round of 5-under 66, allowing him to separate himself by ten shots from Monterrey's Rodrigo Barahona (E) to achieve victory in the most emblematic tournament of Mexican amateur golf.
“I saw myself winning this tournament before arriving, I saw myself lifting the trophy and thinking about what I was going to say in an interview. I work for this and we had to achieve it this week, it is a special trophy for me and it makes me very happy”, assured Islas.
In addition to lifting the cup for the Pachuca-born golfer, Hidalgo went home with an invitation extended by the USGA to play the U.S. Amateur. The 123rd edition of said championship will take place at Cherry Hills Country Club from August 14 to 20, 2023.
“I thank all my team, I really couldn't do this without them; they all know who they are, what they do with me, and how we work. Special thanks to my parents who are the pillars of my team”, concluded the highest ranked Mexican player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.
