The Florida State Men’s Golf team has started to become synonymous with impressive finishes at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate.

“Obviously really proud of the guys for a great start to the spring season,” FSU head coach Trey Jones said. “Especially proud of it being a team effort. We had some gut checks by some young guys today that had some things happen that they bounced back from beautifully.”

The Seminoles entered the competition with consecutive tournament titles in Mobile, and the course once again proved favorable as junior All-American John Pak won another individual championship that helped Florida State secure their third straight tournament title in Mobile, Alabama.

Florida State held off a third-round push from red-hot Louisville and Illinois to finish first in Mobile at 28-under (278-281-277). Illinois placed second at just a stroke behind at 27-under, followed by Louisville (-26), UAB (-22) and first-day leader Texas State (-22).

“John Pak winning by six shows the quality of player he is,” Jones added. “He put the team on his back. Also Jamie Li shoots a bogey-free 68. These guys are showing the young guys the way. When you get 10-under from those guys and the other guys are learning… we’re getting better.”

Pak scored a 6-under on the final round to outshine Texas State’s Calvin Ross and Logan Lockwood. The performance followed up an impressive 9-under through the first two rounds. He finished with a tournament score of 15-under par that included a first-place tie in birdies, carding birdies on 17 out of his 54 holes and led the field with a 3.72 scoring average on the Par 4 holes.

This is Pak’s sixth career tournament title, sitting in second in program history behind only Nolan Henke’s eight career wins from 1983-87.

The All-American was not the only Seminole who impressed Tuesday.

Senior Jamie Li completed a final round of 4-under. The final round was highlighted by his exceptional play on the final back nine where he carded three of his 13 birdies. The strong finish moved him up six spots from 14th to place to a tie for eighth.

The sophomore duo of Calvin Sierota and Alberto Martinez added strong invitational scores. Sierota scored a 3-under through three rounds, and Martinez followed with a 1-under on the final round. Florida State hopes these finishes are indications of progression and continued contribution that will prove to be important throughout the spring season.

“Calvin had a triple bogey on the 11th hole and comes back with an eagle. Alberto was struggling and was two over par through eight holes and finished one under par,” Jones said. “We don’t have a chance if he didn’t do that and compete as hard as he did.”

Cole Anderson tied for 40th and rounded out the rest of the lineup with a 1-over par.
