DENVER, CO (July 15, 2005) -- In the 36-hole final match of the 105th CGA State Match Play Championship at Bear Creek Golf Club, Pat Grady of Omni Interlocken Resort (in white) birdied the second extra hole to defeat Derek Tolan of South Suburban Family Sports Center (in gray) and win 1 up in 38 holes. This was the first final match to go extra holes since Ron Moore won in 39 holes in 1981. For Grady, who won the 2004 CGA Junior Match Play Championship at the same course, the win was his 11th straight match won at Bear Creek. Grady also became only the 10th player to win both the CGA Junior Match Play and the CGA Match Play, the last being Shawn Wills in 2001. Grady’s name will join the likes of Steve Jones, Brandt Jobe and Hale Irwin on the Richard C. Campbell trophy, which will reside at Omni Interlocken Resort for the following year. Both Grady and Tolan will be teammates at the University of Colorado this fall, Grady as a sophomore and Tolan as a red-shirt freshman. Tolan was awarded the CGA Silver Medal as finalist, his ninth finalist or runner-up finish in CGA individual state championships without a victory.
“This was my biggest win by far,” said Grady. “I just tried to make a ton of pars, which is the best plan of attack on a great course like Bear Creek.”
Grady finished the first 18 holes with zero bogies and a 2 up lead. After a short break, Tolan regrouped and made birdies on the 19th and 20th holes to even the match. Grady immediately retook the lead on the 21st hole when Tolan missed his par putt. Another bogey by Tolan on the 23rd hole (the par-4 5th) put Grady 2 up again. Grady then made his first bogey of the match on the 24th hole to drop to 1 up. Grady mover to 2 up with a par on the 26th hole (the par-4 8th), but Tolan responded with birdies on the following two holes to pull back to even with Grady. Again, Grady immediately regained the lead 1 up with a par on the 29th hole of the match, but Tolan pulled back to even with a par on the 31st hole (the par-3 13th) when Grady’s par putt stopped less than an inch from the hole. On the 34th hole (the par-4 16th) Grady drone into the deep native grass, and ended up making bogey giving Tolan his first lead of the day going in to the last two holes. Both players halved the 35th hole and Tolan took a 1 up lead to the 18th tee. Tolan’s drive on the par-4 left him 15 yards from the green in the rough, but he was only able to make bogey from there and Grady’s par forced the match into extra holes. Both players made par on the first extra hole, and on the par-4 second hole, Grady put his second shot eight feet from the hole and Tolan missed the green. After Tolan chipped up close, Grady made the birdie to win the match.

ABOUT THE Colorado Match Play
The CGA Match Play Championship will be played
using the PGA TOUR style match play Pod
Play system at gross scoring. This means that any
player who qualifies for the
championship will be guaranteed at least three (3)
matches in the championship at
CommonGround Golf Course. After each player is
ranked (see below), all players will be
distributed into their pod with three (3) other
players. This will yield 16 pods of four (4)
players. Each player will play all three other players
in their pod (see schedule below). The
winner of each pod will advance to the Round of 16
and a single elimination knockout
round will be played at CommonGround Golf Course.
The top 8 players will advance to
complete the championship at Colorado Golf Club in
a single elimination bracket.
Player Seeding: All 64 players will be ranked 1 – 64.
The defending champion will be
ranked #1. Exempt players will be ranked next based
on their 2020 CGA Player of the Year
points standings. The rest of the field of 64 will be
made from qualifying players that came
from an off-site qualifier. Qualifying players will be
ranked in order of their qualifying score
at their given site.
Pod Assignments/Seeding: The pods will follow the
PGA TOUR style of randomized drawing.
Once players have been seeded 1 - 64, players will
be drawn at random so that each pod
will consist of a player ranked 1 - 16 (Player 1), 17 -
32 (Player 2), 33 - 48 (Player 3) and
49 - 64 (Player 4).
Pod Play Scoring: There will be no extra holes during
the pod play portion of matches.
Scoring during pod play will be as follows: Match
Won – 1 point | Match Tied – ½ point |
Match Lost – 0 Points.
Note: If there is a tie for the pod winner, a sudden
death playoff will determine the person
advancing from that pod.
