SCGA Four-Ball: Hogan, Hurst emerge victorious

CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. (Nov. 6, 2007)--After a three-way tie for first and a five-hole playoff to determine the winner, Bakersfield's Bryan Hogan and Tyler Hurst shot a 12-under-par 132 and vindicated three years' worth of close losses to end as 2007 SCGA Four-Ball champions at Industry Hills Golf Club in City of Industry, but not without true championship excitement.

While the eventual champions, as well as first-round leaders Joe Sanders and Bill Albers of La Quinta and 2006 champions Robert Funk of Canyon Lake and David Bartman of Los Angeles, all parred the first two holes in the initial three-hole aggregate playoff, Hogan-Hurst and Albers-Sanders both birdied the third playoff hole to oust Funk-Bartman. Hogan-Hurst and Albers-Sanders went into sudden death after the tie in the three-hole aggregate playoff, where after Hogan and Albers tied the first playoff hole with an eagle three, Hogan birdied the second hole with a 6-foot putt to win the playoff.

Hogan, a 19-year-old CSU Bakersfield golfer, individually went birdie-eagle-birdie on those final three playoff holes with 22-year-old Hurst; after sinking a 10-foot putt on the par-5 18th to match Sanders' 6-inch birdie putt, he then chipped in from 25 feet off the green for eagle on the par-5 first hole in the playoff rotation to equal Albers' 3-foot eagle opportunity.

"On 18 [the third playoff hole], I hit driver, 3-wood, and lob wedge to hit the 15-foot birdie putt," Hogan said. "I had that exact same putt in the regulation round, so Tyler and I knew the line to take and how it would break."

That was the same putt the duo had missed earlier in regulation, one which could have left them with sole possession of the championship: after a birdie attempt fell mere inches short, Albers and Sanders birdied their attempt to force the tie and the playoff.

Hogan and Hurst were tied for second coming into the final day of play, one shot back from the lead at 6-under 66, while Funk and Bartman were tied for fifth at 5-under 67 and used seven birdies and no bogeys for a 7-under-par finish on the day. Albers and Sanders, who splits his time between La Quinta and Nevada and played for the Northern Nevada Golf Association team during the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship, bogeyed two holes in their final round to shoot a 5-under 67. This is the fourth year that Hogan and Hurst have played in the event together, after coming in second place in 2004 and 2005, they came in fourth place last year.

"Any hole he was having trouble on, I was there," Hurst said. "Any hole I was having trouble on, he was there. We really played well together. It was the first time we had played the course and it wasn't easy-there was a lot of target golf. It's so exciting to finally win it though."

Mark Etue of Escondido and Donald O'Conner of Carlsbad shot a 10-under-par 134 for fourth place, while past California Amateur champion Don DuBois of Newport Beach and Jeff Wilson of Fairfield ended at 9 under par for fifth place.
