ROCKLEDGE, Florida (September 16, 2007) -- West Palm Beach's Erik Downs played a bogey-free 18 holes Sunday to win the 47th Platinum Coast golf tournament at Rockledge County Club.

Downs, a sophomore member of the Flagler College golf team, shot rounds of 71 and 67 to total 4-under-par 138 and edge Brevard Community College's Devin Spies of Rockledge by one stroke. Spies shot 70 and 69 to finish at 139.

Four golfers tied for third at 141: Chris Muratori of BCC, who hails from New Smyrna Beach; Ian Ross; former BCC golfer Kyle Westhorpe of Titusville; and Jason Kimpel of BCC, who hails from Atlanta.

Dennis Brady of Melbourne won the senior title, shooting 70 and 74 for 144 to defeat Ken Courtier (76-72-148), Jay Jennison (78-73-151) and last year's senior winner, Chip Peterson of Melbourne (76-75-151).

Consistency was the key for Downs.

"I just played solid for two rounds," he said. "I putted good, hit the ball good, chipped good, did everything pretty good."

Downs finished 20 minutes ahead of the final foursome and waited under threatening skies before being able to claim his first major tournament title.

He wasn't sure about his chances coming in, though.

"I didn't play that much beforehand," he said. "Some of my friends helped me out during the practice round and got it going."

Downs said the difference between Saturday's round and Sunday's round on the par-71 course was his irons.

"I probably hit my irons closer and better than yesterday," Downs said. "I had a couple of loose holes yesterday and today I was pretty solid throughout the whole 18."

For Spies, it came down to not taking advantage of opportunities.

"Coming in, I had downhill putts -- gave myself chances. I just didn't make them," he said.

"I was right where I wanted to be with a chance on the back nine, that's all I could do, the putts wouldn't drop. Overall, I'm happy because I haven't been playing well recently. But there's always room for improvement. I left a bunch of shots out there."

Spies now looks forward to the start of BCC's fall season next Sunday and Monday at Webber International University's tournament in Haines City.

Club pro Ed Buckey was pleased with the two-day tournament.

"We had a lot of good players out here, a lot of low scores," he said.

"Somebody asked me before the tournament started and I said '4- or 5-under would win' and 4-under won."

For Brady, a hamburger and a little talk with himself made the difference.

"On the front nine (Sunday), I shot a 40 because then I hit a couple of errant drives," he said. "On the back nine, I shot 1 over, I had to suck it up a little bit.

"The guys got a little close there toward the back . . . the one guy birdied (No.) 9 and I bogeyed it and I went, "Geez, I gotta suck it up, so I stopped and got a hamburger, sucked up, had a little internal meeting and said, 'This is it.' We got it straightened up on the back nine."
