NAPA, CA (November 15, 2017) - William Charpek (Red Bank, NJ) will sleep well tonight after what must have been a grueling final round at the Society of Seniors (SOS) Founders Cup tournament at the Silverado Resort.

Charpek took a five-shot lead into the final round, but immediately gave two back on the first hole with a double-bogey 6. His closest pursuer, Steve Hudson (Birmingham, AL) birdied the third hole, and when Charpek followed with a bogey, the lead was down to one. Another birdie by Hudson at the par-five fifth and Charpek's lead was gone.

Charpek pulled two shots ahead with a par at the 6th and a birdie at the 8th, but another two-shot swing in Hudson's favor knotted it up again at the 11th. Hudson then took his first lead of the tournament on the next hole as Charpek made a second straight bogey.

As soon as he got out in front, it was Hudson's turn to stumble, making bogeys at two of the next three holes to hand a one-shot lead back to Charpek.

Mark Knecht (Paducah, KY) started the day seven shots behind, but kept getting closer as the two leaders were backing up. When Knecht birdied the par-four 17th as Charpek and Hudson were making bogey, Knecht was suddenly tied with Hudson and only one-shot behind Charpek, but that is the way the tournament would finish as all three players parred the par-five finishing hole.

Charpek closed with a 6-over 78 to finish at 2-over 218; Hudson (74) and Knecht (72) finished one shot back at 219.

Jonathan Valuck (Oklahoma City, OK) finished solo fourth at 5-over 221, with Jeff Burda (Modesto, CA) fifth at 9-over 225.

In the Super Senior division, Jim Rollefson (Naples, FL) defeated Evan Long (Charlotte, NC) in a playoff after both players finished tied at 4-over 220. Rollefson was five shots back starting the day but closed with a 72; Long finished with a 75.

The second round co-leaders, Gary Kirwan (McKinney, TX) and Phillip Anamizu (Honolulu, HI), both struggled in the final round. Kirwan closed with a 79 to finish third, bogeying his final two holes to miss the playoff by two shots. Anamizu shot an 80 and finished three shots back, tied with Jay Blumenfeld (Parsippany, NJ) and Rich Tolly (Laguna Hills, CA).

In the Grand Master division, Ron Johnson (Walnut Creek, CA) shot a 76 for a 223 total to win by three shots over Rick Kline (Pinehurst, NC). Frank Abbott (Las Vegas, NV) and Jerry Hutton(Long Beach, CA) tied for third at 227, with John Walker (Scottsdale, AZ) fifth at 229.

SECOND ROUND RECAP

On a day when only one player managed to break par, William Charpek (Red Bank, NJ) posted an even-par 72 to extend his lead to five shots heading into the final round at the Silverado Resort.

Charpek started the day with a three-shot cushion over two players, including Steve Hudson (Birmingham, AL) who made the biggest push to make the tournament competitive. Hudson weathered an early double-bogey and started to chip away at Charpek's lead, making three birdies in the middle of the round. When Charpek bogeyed the par-four 13th the two were actually tied at two-under for the tournament, but the next three holes were the turning point in the tournament.

Hudson went bogey-double-par on 14-16 while Charpek went birdie-par-birdie. Suddenly the lead was five, where it stayed as the two parred the final two holes.

Charpek finished the round at 4-under 140 with Hudson (71-74) at 145.

Mark Knecht (Paducah, KY) was within two shots on the back nine, but lost three shots coming in to finish with a 75 and a 147 total, seven shots back. Jonathan Valuck (Oklahoma City, OK) shot a 76 to sit in fourth at 148, with Leon Roday (Henrico, VA) and Jeff Burda (Modesto, CA) tied for fifth at 149.

In the Super Senior division, Phillip Anamizu (Honolulu, HI) shot an even-par 72 to make up a two-stroke deficit against first-round leader Gary Kirwan (McKinney, TX). Both players enter the final round tied at 1-under 143.

Evna Long (Charlotte, NC) sits two shots back at 145, with Jim Rollefson (Naples, FL) solo fourth at 148. Kemp Richardson (Laguna Niguel, CA) and Richard Hageman (Garden Ridge, TX) are tied for fifth at 149.

In the Grand Master division, Ron Johnson (Walnut Creek, CA) has built a four-shot lead after rounds of 73-74. Four players sit tied for second at 151: Rick Kline (Pinehurst, NC), John Walker (Scottsdale, AZ), Frank Abbott (Las Vegas, NV), and Jerry Hutton (Long Beach, CA).

Hutton fired the day's low round, a one-under 71.

FIRST ROUND RECAP

William Charpek of Red Bank, NJ shot a 4-under 68 to take a three-shot lead after the first round of the Society of Seniors (SOS) Founders Cup tournament at the Silverado Resort.

After making the turn at even par, Charpek birdied four holes on the back nine to pull ahead of the field. Jeff Burda (Modesto, CA) and Steve Hudson (Birmingham, AL) each shot 1-under 71s to share second place.

Burda turned around a sluggish start with an eagle on the par-five ninth hole, while Hudson eagled the par-five 18th to flip his card from black to red numbers.

Mark Knecht (Paducah, KY) and Jonathan Valuck (Oklahoma City, OK) are tied for fourth at even-par 72.

In the Super Senior division, Gary Kirwan (McKinney, TX) birdied his final three holes to post a 3-under 69, good for a two-shot lead over Phillip Anamizu (Honolulu, HI), the only other player to shoot an under-par round.

Bob Olds (Brentwood, CA) and Rick Kline (Pinehurst, NC) share fifth at four-over 76.
