MADISON, Miss. (June 10, 2007)-– On the final day at the Mississippi State Amateur, Steve Wilson, of Ocean Springs, shot a 4-under par, 68, to claim his first State Amateur title.
Wilson came out firing posting a 35 on the front nine, which included eight pars and one birdie. At the turn, Wilson was tied with Clay Homan, the leader entering Sunday’s final round. On the back nine, Wilson began to pull away with back-to-back birdies on holes 14 and 15, giving him a three stroke lead with three holes to play. Wilson handled the pressure down the stretch very well paring the last three holes to secure his victory over Starkville’s Josh Bevell.
Entering Sunday’s final round, Bevell, a member of the Mississippi State golf team, was four strokes behind the leader Homan. A strong final round 68 including a hole-in-one on the par three fifteenth gave Bevell a four day total of 283 and a second place finish.
Homan, of Starkville, shot a 2-over par, 74, to finish in fourth place with a total score of 285. Scott Rhodes of Ridgeland, and Matt Fast of Hattiesburg also a member of the Mississippi State golf team, rounded out the top five shooting a four day total of 285 and 286 respectively.
