Kyle McLatchie earns Argentine Amateur medalist honors
Kyle McLatchie
(Argentina Golf Association)
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (November 9, 2016) -- Through 17-holes South African Kyle McLatchie had been flawless but he needed a bit more magic to lock up the Argentine Amateur medalist honors. Sitting at 10-under and tied for the lead at Pilar Golf Club with one hole remaining McLatchie found the extra separation he needed in the form of an eagle on the par-5 closing hole.
The eagle capped off a pristine 7-under 65 in the final round that pushed McLatchie to 12-under and two in front of second place finisher and first round leader Andres Schonbaum.
Starting the day 5-under and one off the pace McLatchie birdied his first three holes and then added additional birdies on Nos. 14 and 16.
Schonbaum worked to keep up with a bogey-free, five birdie second side but he was done in by a 1-over front nine. In the end Schonbaum signed for a 4-under 68 and a two day 10-under score.
Juan Alvarez completed the final day of 36-hole stroke-play qualifying at 7-under and in third, Andres Jose Miranda was fourth at 5-under while six others including Florida State senior Cristobal Del Solar shared fifth at 4-under.
When play continues on Thursday only the top-64 will remain and match play will commence. A champion will be crowned at the conclusion of Sunday's 36-hole title match.
