Jay Gregory takes Iowa Senior lead with Second Round 66

AMES, IA (August 23, 2016) -- Lineville’s Jay Gregory, following an opening round 70 (-1) on Monday, turned some heads with a second round 66 (-5). Gregory now leads the 38th Iowa Senior Amateur at Ames Golf & CC by three strokes over Gene Elliott and Curtis Holck.Gregory’s round was clean – five birdies, including four on this opening nine holes (#10-18), and no bogeys.

Elliott made four birdies of his own, but also collected three bogeys. Holck’s round included three birdies and just a lone bogey. Six back of the lead are Bret Taylor and Scott Briggs, with and even par for the tournament.

Also of note – John Peters shot his age in the second round, 68 (-3) and is currently tied for sixth place overall.

In the Super Senior Division, Jim Campbell and defending champion Tom Sandie are tied at 151 (+9). Just two shots back is Tim Taylor.

The tournament concludes tomorrow, Wednesday, August 24.

ROUND ONE RECAP

He’s back in a familiar position.

Gene Elliott, who just missed out capturing the Iowa Senior Amateur title in 2015, posted an opening round 69 (-2) this year’s championship being contested at Ames Golf & Country Club.

Elliott, of West Des Moines, fresh off an appearance at the U.S. Senior Open in Ohio, got off to a hot start, birdieing his first two holes of the round this morning. He would add three more before his day was over.

Just a shot back is Lineville’s Jay Gregory and Ankeny’s Curtis Holck. A total of five players are tied for fourth at even par (71). Defending champion Joe Palmer, of West Des Moines, sits just three strokes off the pace at 72.

In the Super Senior Division, Johnston’s Mick Albaugh and last year’s Super Senior champion Tom Sandie, of Urbandale, are tied at 75 (+4).
