CHATTANOOGA, TN (July 26, 2016) -- Ben Wolcott is looking to gain some momentum heading into his senior year at Ole Miss and so far his performance at the Chattanooga Choo Choo is helping him do just that. Wolcott shot a second round 8-under 64 to move to 13-under and take a five-stroke lead heading into the final round at Council Fire Golf Course. The 64 tied the tournaments scoring record.
Wolcott shot a first round 67 before catching fire on Tuesday during his second round. The tone was set early with birdies on the first two holes. Wolcott followed those birds up with birdies on Nos. 5 and 7 and then an eagle two on the par-4 9th to shoot an opening nine, 6-under 30.
On the back nine Wolcott cooled a bit with a bogey on the 12th but he was able to offset it with three birdies, including one on the closing hole. Wolcott birdied seven holes, eagled one and bogeyed one during his round.
Through 36-holes this week Wolcott has carded just three bogeys while pouring in 14 birdies and of course the eagle.
First round co-leaders Wes Gosselin and Michael Nagy remain tied, only now it is a tie for second place at 8-under. Both players shot second round 1-under 71's.
Fifth year Chattanooga senior Wes Gosselin, a 2016 All-Southern Conference performer, had played 4-under bogey-free golf through his first 15 holes to reach 11-under before unraveling a bit down the stretch. A bogey on the 16th dropped him back to 10-under and then a double-bogey on the 18th brought him all the way back to 8-under.
Recent Tennessee graduate Michael Nagy reached the 8-under mark with a four birdie, three bogey round.
Tripp French (Dayton) is fourth at 7-under while defending champion Taylor Lewis, USC Upstate commit Jordan Warnock and future NC State Wolfpack Benjamin Shipp share the fifth position at 6-under.
The final round will begin at 7:30 a.m. EST.
Wolcott will begin his final round at 12:30 p.m. playing with Nagy and Gosselin.
