Semifinals set in Championship Division of Anderson Memorial

MAMARONECK, NY (June 11, 2016) -- With the 36-holes of match play in the books the semifinals of the 2016 Anderson Memorial at Winged Foot Golf Club have been determined. The semifinals will begin Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m. EST with the championship match to follow in the afternoon.

In the first semifinal No. 9 Andy Cooper/Craig Hurlbert (Bluejack National Golf Club) will face No. 12 Mark Gauley/Brian Gauley (Raleigh Country Club).

The team of Cooper/Hurlbert advanced with a 1 up win over Matthew Mattare/Mark McGowan (Saucon Valley Country Club) in the Round of 16 and a 4&3 victory against Hans Albertsson/Brian Williams (Winged Foot Golf Club) in the quarterfinals.

Their opponents defeated the five-seed Riley Pumphrey/Ross Hamann (Spanish Oaks Golf Club) 1 up in the Round of 16 before easily taking care of No. 13 Steve Marland/Dean Burke (Champions Golf Club) 6&5 in the quarters.

Fifteen minutes after the first final four match tees off No. 7 Roger Newsom/Adam Horton (Elizabeth Manor Golf and CC) will battle No. 6 Chris Troy/James Nicholas (Winged Foot Golf Club) in the second semifinal.

Newsom/Horton moved forward thanks to a 5&4 Round of 16 win over No. 10 Lawrence Largent/John Smith (Greenville Country Club) and a quarterfinal 5&4 victory over 15-seed Shane Heise/Scott Loving (Conroe Country Club).

Troy/Nichols advanced to the semifinals with a 3&1 win against No. 11 Pascal Grizot/J.J. Wolff (LePrieure Golf Club) in the Round of 16 and then a 4&3 quarterfinals triumph over No. 3 Luis Fernando Barco/Alberto Menacho (Lima Golf Club).

The medalist winners, Michael Quagliano/Cameron Young (Sleepy Hollow Country Club), were defeated in the Round of 16 by 16-seed Hans Albertsson/Brian Williams (Winged Foot Golf Club). Albertsson/Williams advanced to the match play round after winning a playoff for the final spot on Saturday morning.

SENIOR DIVISION

Saturday play in the Senior Division saw the eight teams that advanced to the weekend battle it out in the quarterfinals. Anderson Memorial Senior play will also be concluded tomorrow with the semifinals and championship match set to be contested.

The first semifinal match at 7:00 a.m. EST will feature No. 8 Jay Pumphrey/Dave Clement (Desert Mountain Club) and No. 4 Jay Sessa/Don Enga (Cherry Valley Club).

Pumphrey/Clement upset medalist winners George Marucci/Kelly Miller (Seminole Golf Club) 4&3 to advance while their opponents beat five-seed Robbie Dew/Rocky Costa (Abacoa Golf Club) 3&2.

At 7:15 a.m. EST the second final four match between No. 2 George Zahringer/Brady Exber (The Floridian) and No. 6 Matt Sughrue/Ed Offterdinger (Bethesda Country Club) will tee off.

Zahringer/Exber, the highest seed to advance in either division, survived against No. 7 Paul Simson/Albert Huddleston (Maridoe Golf Club) 2&1 as Sughrue/Offterdinger beat No. 3 Bart Goodwin/Mike Peck (Old American Golf Club).

STROKE PLAY RECAP

Once again a major four-ball tournament is being contested at Winged Foot Golf Club. Just weeks after the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball was played on the famed course the club is hosting the annual Anderson Memorial.

Friday marked the final of two days of stroke-play qualifying with Michael Quagliano and Cameron Young of Sleepy Hollow Country Club earning medalist honors. The duo put together rounds of 74-62 to finish 4-under and ahead of the field by one. Quagliano and Young were 4-over after first round play on the East Course before catching fire and putting together an 8-under second round on the West Course.

In all 16 teams advanced to the weekend with the final three teams coming out of a four team playoff.

The surviving teams were Ryan Hill and Eric Joseph (Oak Hill Country Club); Shane Heise and Scott Loving (Conroe Country Club); Hans Albertsson and Brian Williams playing (Winged Foot Golf Club).

Albertsson and Williams earned the final match play spot on Saturday morning after play was suspended on Friday evening due to darkness.

Round of 16 play will be held Saturday morning with the quarterfinals to follow in the afternoon. On Sunday the semifinals will be contested in the morning before the finals are playing in the afternoon.

SENIOR DIVISION

Of the 28 teams that began play on Thursday just eight will advance to tomorrow's match play. Saturday play will feature only the quarterfinal matches while the semifinal and championship matches are slated for Sunday.

The medalist winner in the Senior Division was the duo of George Marucci and Kelly Miller out of Seminole Golf Club. Marucci and Miller posted scores of 69-66 to finish 6-under and capture the medalist honors by three.

Of the eight teams still alive, two advanced to the weekend after surviving a four team for two spots playoff. The surviving teams were Paul Simson and Albert Huddleston (Maridoe Golf Club); Jay Pumphrey and Dave Clement (Desert Mountain Club).

Quarterfinal play will begin tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. EST.
