DASMARINAS, PHL (April 29, 2016) - In a surprise outcome the 10-seed Noel Langamin has won the 2016 Philippine Amateur Open Match Play Championship title. Langamin defeated top-seeded Rupert Zaragos 3&2 in the 36-hole championship match at the Orchard Golf and Country Club for the biggest win of his career. In the strange ways of sports four of the five matches that Lanamin played this week ended 3&2.

In the final Langamin was able to jump on Zaragos early and grabbed a 6-up advantage during the first 18-holes. Zaragos did make a run during the final 18-holes but the deficit was to big to overcome.

Langamin finished the stroke play qualifying stage in 10th before defeating Bobby Celestino and Jelbert Gamolo 3&2 in the first two rounds of match play. In the quaterfinals Lanamin upended second-seed Tom Kim 1-up and then beat Yuto Katsuragawa 3&2 in the semifinals.

In the women's Amateur Open Match Play Championship Hwang Min Jeong defeated Diana Araneta 4&2. Min Jeong grabbed a 2-up lead during the opening 18 and was then able to extend her lead in the day's second round. For Min Jeong this was her second big win in the last seven months following her win over then amateur and now LPGA player Cyna Rodriguez at the Mount Malarayat Championship.
