Taylor Welborn medals at Atlanta Amateur Match Play
Taylor Welborn
MILTON, Ga. — After an 18-hole round of stroke play to determine seeds, the bracket has been set at the Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship. The 97th playing of the annual competition is taking place at Atlanta National Golf Club, September 24-27.
Taylor Welborn of LaGrange fired a 6-under-par 66 to earn medalist honors. Welborn, the defending champion Lee Knox of St. Simons Island (who was exempt from the stroke play round), and 30 others make up the match play bracket.
Knox will begin his title defense as the top seed as he takes on Bob Royak of Alpharetta in the round of 32. Welborn will face Mitch Kim of Cumming in his opening match.
Ten players posted a score of 3-over-par 75, so a playoff was needed to determine the final two spots in match play. Of those 10 players, Kim and Royak advanced.
Entries were open to male amateur golfers who are GSGA members. The field consists of the 120 entrants with the lowest USGA Handicap Indexes.
