ROUND ROCK, TX (July 23, 2006)--There is no such thing as a bad time to make your first hole-in-one, but Stephen Paterson picked an especially good time to make his.
Paterson used a 5-iron to hole out on the 187-yard 6th hole Sunday at Forest Creek, and that ace propelled him to a victory in the ninth Central Texas Amateur Championship.
After the hole-in-one Paterson went on to post a closing round of 3-under 69, the low round of the tournament, to win with a 36-hole total of 1-over-par 145. Defending champion Billy Clagett and Brett Scarber tied for second at 147. Grady Bruce finished fourth at 149.
Paterson said he was playing well going into the tournament, but he was tied for 10th after a Saturday opening round of 76.
"I was kind of hurting after the first five holes today (Sunday)", Paterson said. "I missed a 5-footer (for birdie) on No. 3 and a 2-footer on No. 4, and at that point I knew I was well back of the leaders. But a one on your card definitely helps."
Paterson followed the hole-in-one with a birdie on the par-5 seventh. He made short birdie putts on Nos. 15 and 17 and got in the house with a final-round 69 and two-day total of 1-over 145 while others still on the course were scrambling.
Several players had the title within reach but fell just short. Clagett holed out from 75 yards for an eagle on the par-5 seventh and had a two-shot lead with nine holes to play. But he fell back with bogeys on Nos. 11 and 14.
