Florida Mid-Am Match Play: Matthew Salane is Medalist
JUPITER, Florida (Oct. 10, 2014) -- Matthew Salane, coming off of a first round 73 at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Loxahatchee Club, followed up with a memorable round of 65 to take medalist honors during the medal play qualifying portion of the Florida Mid Amateur.
Salane, of Jacksonville, started with a birdie, made 6 straight pars, then found the zone starting on the 7th.
After back-to-back birdies on Nos. 7 and 8, and a par on the 9th, Salane went out in 33 and did one better on the back nine, recording four birdies and no bogeys.
On the Tour, bogey free rounds don't come every day -- they are even more rare in amateur golf. Salane will be the man-to-watch this week as matches get underway starting Saturday. Qualifying just behind him at 140 were Palm Beach County stalwart RJ Nakashian (Palm Beach Gardens), and Jaime Girardi (New Port Richey).
The next competitors were a full six strokes back of the leading three and will find any of them to be tough competitors in match play.
