Georgia Amateur: Kelby Burton ahead by two
MACON, Ga. - Kelby Burton of Evans leads the Georgia Amateur Championship at 4-under-par 136 through two rounds of action. The 93rd playing of the annual state championship is taking place at Idle Hour Club, July 10-13.

Burton recorded five birdies (one, eight, 12, 15, 16) and one bogey (seven) on Friday en route to his 4-under-par 66 round. Burton's 4-under-par 136 (70-66) 36-hole total is better than three players who are tied for second at 2-under-par 138, including Zachary Healy of Peachtree Corners (72-66), Stan Gann, Jr., of Bonaire (71-67) and Steven Fisk of Stockbridge (69-69). Healy is a previous winner on the GSGA circuit, claiming the 2013 Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship.

Burton, a 22-year-old who will begin his fifth year at Kennesaw State University this fall, earned a pair of top 10 finishes this past collegiate season. Last year at the Georgia Amateur Championship, which was played at Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw, Burton tied for 33rd. His KSU teammate, Jimmy Beck of Columbus, won that edition of the state championship on the school's home course. Speaking of KSU, Chad Wilson of Calhoun is the assistant coach of the Owls and finished at 2-over-par 142 (69-73), and Wyatt Larkin of Morganton, who will begin his collegiate career there this fall, finished at 8-over-par 148 (73-75).

Idle Hour's reigning club champion, John Walker IV of Macon, is tied for 11th at 1-over-par 141 (73-68).

After 36-holes of play, 77 players made the cut at 8-over-par 148 and better. Of those players who advanced to the weekend, nine have a 36-hole score in red numbers. Of those nine, only Fisk scored in the 60's each of the first two rounds.

The Georgia Amateur Championship is conducted by the Georgia State Golf Association and brings together 144 of the state's best male amateur golfers for the prestigious state title first won by 14-year-old Bobby Jones in 1916. Idle Hour Club is hosting this event for the record eighth time, and first since 2008. This week Idle Hour is playing to 6,727 yards and a par 70.

The Championship format is 72 holes of stroke play over four days. After 36 holes of play, the field has been cut to the low 70 players and ties and anyone within 10 strokes of the leader.
