WESTMINSTER, Colo. (July 9, 2014) -- University of Colorado golfer David Oraee won two matches on Wednesday and advanced to the quarterfinals in his title defense at the 114th CGA Match Play Championship at The Heritage at Westmoor in Westminster.
Oraee, from Colorado National Golf Club, defeated Cody Vance of Raccoon Creek Golf Course 5 and 4 in the round of 32, and Matt Porter of CommonGround Golf Course 3 and 1 in the Sweet 16.
But what could have been a rematch of last year's final was avoided when Cole Cunningham of Valley Country Club edged Parker Edens of Greeley Country Club, 1 up in the round of 16. Edens was a finalist in the Match Play each of the last two years. So Cunningham will be Oraee's quarterfinal opponent, not Edens.
Also ousted in a day of upsets Wednesday were both of Monday's stroke-play co-medalists -- Steven Kupcho of CommonGround Golf Course and Dylan Mitchell of Lakewood Country Club -- who both fell in the round of 32.
In fact, Oraee (pictured) is the only one of the top 14 seeds to make the quarterfinals.
Joining Oraee and Cunningham in the quarterfinals are Jacob Allenback of Walking Stick Golf Course, Gus Lundquist of Colorado Golf Club, Colin Prater of the Broadmoor Golf Club, Cody Kent of the Country Club at Castle Pines, Zach Tripp of Foothills Golf Course and Jeffrey Gravina of Pinehurst Country Club
In the round of 32 matchup of brothers from Pueblo, Allenback needed 22 holes to defeat younger brother Justin.
Another two rounds of matches will be played on Thursday, leaving two players for Friday's 36-hole final.
