Missouri Amateur: Johnson rolls to 2nd straight
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (June 29, 2014) -- Joey Johnson continued his dominant play at the Missouri State Amateur Sunday, defeating Joseph Atkisson to win a second straight state title.
At Norwood Hills, Johnson, who medaled during stroke-play qualifying and took the No. 1 match-play seed, rolled past No. 8 Atkisson, 6 and 4, in the final match.
Johnson raced out to an early lead and really never looked back.
During the morning round, he won three of the first four holes and Nos. 6-9 to finish the front nine 6-up.
Johnson was lights out, winning with birdies on Nos. 1, 4, 7, 8 and 9 and recording an eagle on No. 2.
In the afternoon round, Atkisson played well but the lead was too much to overcome. Johnson would win with a par on the 14th hole (32nd of the match).
