W. Penn. Public Links: Poplowski prevails
ELWOOD CITY, Penn. (June 3, 2014) -- Eric Poplowski shot consecutive rounds of even par 70 and won the 2014 Western Pennsylvania Public Links Championship by two shots at Olde Stonewall Golf Club.

Poplowski ralled from two shots back of first-round leader James Augustine and held off a surge from runner-up Brian Ulanowicz, who shot a final-round 2-under 68 to move up the leaderboard.

Sean Knapp and Augustine finished tied for third place while defending champion Erik Bertrand and Easton Renwick tied for fifth place.

ABOUT THE Western Pennsylvania Public Links

One of the WPGA’s newest championships is named for a top golfer of the 20’s and 30’s. Carl Kauffmann, the “Schenley Sphinx,” won the USGA Amateur Public Links, 1927-29, and was runner-up in 1926. He also won the 1925 West Penn Amateur, at which time the WPGA Executive Committee banned public golfers from the championship. Few men have ever won three straight USGA titles; only Willie Anderson and Tiger Woods (twice) have. The Public Links is a 36-hole stroke play competition. Naming the new event was easy with a player like Kaufmann in our history.
