National Invitational: Log jam atop Whisper Rock leaderboard
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (April 22, 2014) -- There's plenty of parity in the field at The National at Whisper Rock and that's a good thing.
Six teams shot 3-under 69 in Tuesday's first round and 14 others sit no less than three shots back entering Wednesday's Round 2.
Defending champions Barry Dyche and Jason Pool find themselves in a familiar position and are among the leaders. The teams of Joe Bendetti and Jim Strickland, Mike Flood, Jr. and Ken Tanigawa, Kane Hanson and Dave Kelly, Ben Hayes and Taylor Wood and Andy Latowski and Ted Neville all shot 3-under and share the first-round lead.
In the Senior Division, Todd Barsotti and Jeff Wilson lead by one shot after a first-round 4-under 68. Larry Nunez and John Pigg are alone in second at 69.
The event is a two-man best-ball invitational event with Mid-Am and Senior Divisions and is played at both lower and upper courses at the very highly acclaimed Whisper Rock Golf Club, which boasts many Tour players among its membership, including both Phil Mickelson and his caddie Jim "Bones" Mackay.
The field features a number of elite mid-amateur and senior players as well as celebrities and former professional athletes. This year's field includes former Major League Baseball stars John Smoltz and Mickey Tettleton, former NMA player and head coach Vinny Del Negro and former NFL quarterback Billy Jo Tolliver.
