PINEHURST, NC (June 18, 2006) -- Final round results of the 46th North Carolina Amateur Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by Forest Creek Golf Club, South course, in Pinehurst, NC on Sunday, June 18, 2006. (7038 yards, par 36-36—72).

Mike Goodes, 49, of Reidsville led wire-to-wire to claim his second North Carolina Amateur Championship and fifth CGA title. Goodes won the state amateur championship in 1989 in a playoff over Steve Harwell of Mooresville at The Pearl Golf Club in Calabash, NC. He also won his third Carolinas Mid-Amateur crown back in April at Musgrove Mill Golf Club in Clinton, SC.

Goodes, a member at Pennrose Park Golf Club, sprinted out to a commanding lead after opening with an eight-under par 64 effort on Thursday that included a front-nine 29.

He followed with rounds of 70, 72 and a final round 72 to finish the championship at 10-under par 278, four strokes ahead of Robert Riesen of Pinehurst.

“It’s hard leading from start to finish”, Goodes said. “I was glad to get started today. I knew that I didn’t need to play aggressive”.

Riesen gave chase and closed within one-stroke of Goodes on the 12th hole. But bogeys on 16, 17 and 18 dashed Riesen’s chances.

“I played great all four days”, stated Goodes. “I got off to a great start today and was able to settle into the flow of the round. I didn’t feel nervous at all”.

Defending champion Jerry Richardson of Burlington carded a final round 68 to finish in 14th place.

The top 30 finishers and ties are exempt into the 47th North Carolina Amateur Championship to be played at Starmount Forest Country Cub in Greensboro, NC, June 14-17, 2007.
