Carolinas Young Amateur: Bae, Cole lead
Pinehurst, NC (Dec. 30, 2013) -- Sarah Bae of Cary, NC and Preston Cole of Greer, SC lead after the first round of the 6th Carolinas Young Amateur. Bae, freshman at High Point University, shot a round of four under 68 and leads the women’s division by five shots. Bae played solid golf all day and recorded five birdies and one bogey on the par 72 Magnolia course at Pinewild CC in Pinehurst. Courtney McKim of Raleigh, NC and Emily Brooks of Chapel Hill, NC are tied for second place with rounds of one over par 73. Kelsey Badmaev of Columbia, SC sits alone in fourth place at 74.
Cole, a freshman at Furman University, finished with a five under par 67 and a one shot lead heading into Tuesday’s final round. Miller Capps of Denver, NC is in second place after his round of 68. In third place with a 69 is Erik Ehlert of Raleigh. Caleb Sturgeon of Laurens, SC, John Somers of Elon, NC and Wesley Conover of Holly Springs, NC are tied for fourth place with rounds of two under par 70. Defending champion Eric Brady of Cary, NC shot a round of even par 72.
This annual tournament is open to men and women ages 18 to 24 that have finished high school and is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.

Entry is open to any male or female
amateur
golfer between the ages of 18 and 25
who
have finished high school who is a legal
resident of
North or South Carolina, is a member in
good
standing of a club which is a member of
the
Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a
current
USGA handicap index at a CGA member
club.
The championship format is 36 holes of
stroke
play.
