NORMANSIDE, N.Y. (Sept. 17, 2013) — A crisp, cool mid-September morning welcomed senior amateur golfers to Normanside Country Club, host of the 2013 New York State Men’s Senior Amateur & Super-Senior Amateur Championships, located in the Capital region of New York State. The Championships are conducted concurrently over 54-holes of stroke play with a field size of 127 players.
Scott Dean, playing out of Attica Golf Club, shot an even-par 70 in the first round to claim the overall lead in the Senior Amateur. Dean, three-over at the turn, characterized his front nine as “pretty basic” with three bogeys and several missed birdie-putt attempts.
“It was rather chilly when we teed off so it takes my body a couple of holes to get loose”, Dean said. “I like the sun beating down on me”.
As the day progressed, the sun became increasingly visible and with self-proclaimed luck on his side, Dean hit his stride on the back nine.
Most notably, on the par-5 10th, Dean chipped in, from about 20-feet in front of the green, for an eagle. He rounded out the back nine with two birdies on the par-3 17th and the par-4 18th.
“My body was looser on the back nine but really, I just got a lot of breaks,” Dean said.
As this is his fourth time competing in the N.Y.S. Senior Amateur, Dean is well aware of how he needs to play tomorrow to make the cut for the final round on Thursday.
Randy Young of Bellevue Country Club, William Lebeau of Van Schaick Island Country Club, and Fred Arliss of Wayne Hills Country Club are tied for the overall lead in the Super-Senior Amateur with a three-over par 73, after the first round. Young, Lebeau, and Arliss are tied for eighth in the Senior Amateur.
Round 2 will begin at 8:00AM on Wednesday morning with players teeing off #1 and #10. There will be a cut after Round 2 to the low 50% and ties in each age division (55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70+).
