The annual Spring Cup was established in
1903. It was later renamed the Mary Thayer
Farnum Cup in honor of Mrs. Charles Farnum
from the Merion Cricket Club, who served as
the first President of the Association in 1897
The tournament was originally open to Class A
and Class B golfers, but due to the large
number of entries, Class B was eliminated in
1956.: It has always been a two-day, 36-hole
stroke play event.
In 1981 it was renamed the Philadelphia Stroke
Play Championship for the Mary Thayer Farnum
Along with the familiar names of past and
present winners, note that Debbie Massey
(1972 & 1975) and Judy Dickinson (Mrs.
Kenneth Clark 1976 & 1977) also were
victorious in this event during their years of
amateur golf with The Women’s Golf
Association of Philadelphia.
