Oregon Amateur: Peterson defeats Paton
PORTLAND, ORE. (June 23, 2011) - The marathon that is the Oregon Amateur began in earnest today at Waverley Country Club as the Men's Division began the day with the round of 32 and those that survived turned around to play afternoon matches in order establish Friday's quarterfinal matches.
For the Men's division, it was deja vu all over again as the defending champion had to take on last year's finals opponents today. The result was, for all intents and purposes, the same. Paul Peterson of Salem, Ore. won his match over Jack Paton of Hillsborough, Calif.
It was a good day for the men with Oregon State connections as many had a successful Duck hunt. Peterson also won his afternoon match to advance to the quarterfinals along with Tyler Simpson of Happy Valley, Ore. who also sent a Duck packing with his 1-up afternoon win over Tye Gabriel of Portland, Ore.
Joining them in the quarterfinals is current Oregon State Golfer and medalist Nick Sherwood of Albany, Ore.
Only one Duck, Jack Dukeminer of Eugene, Ore. remains in the Men's field as he easily advanced with a 5 & 4 morning win and a 4 & 3 afternoon result. His afternoon win was over senior golfer Michael Kloenne of West Linn, Ore. who in the morning sent Dukeminier's Oregon teammate Robbie Ziegler of Canby, Ore. home earlier than expected.
