Just like on the men’s side, the US Women’s Mid-Amateur has seen some of the top seeds go down early. In today’s round of 32, top-seeded Casey Ward of Canada fell to her fellow Canadian Christina Proteau, 3&1.
The 32nd seeded Proteau will now face 17th-seed Martha Leach of Hebron, Kentucky, who took care of #16 Shawn Farmer-Sese with a 3&2 win in the morning. Their match will take place at 1:00 CDT.
Lauren Greenlief, the #2 seed from Oakton, Va., took the lead for good when she went 1-up on the 6th hole with a birdie. A birdie on no. 9 gave her a 3-up cushion, and all she needed was a few pars to earn her 3&2 victory.
Fourth seed Margaret Shirley of Roswell, Ga, fought her way to a win over the 36-seed from Portland, Oregon, Amanda Jacobs. The match went back and forth with each player taking a 2-up lead at some point, but it was Shirley who went 2-up on no. 16 to hold onto a 1-up win.
Players are out on the course now for their second of the day. Look for further updates.
