SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Jon Rahm's Arizona State men's golf team won the Arizona Intercollegiate last week in Tucson — though the top-ranked amateur from Spain and Sun Devil junior was not part of the five-man team to win their rival's event by 11 shots.

Rahm was preparing for his exemption into the PGA TOUR's Waste Management Phoenix Open in Scottsdale, where he has carded first and second rounds of 70 and 68 to make the cut — as well as sit inside the top-20.

LIVE SCORING

Rahm had a little fun with the crowd on the notorious 16th hole on Thursday as the Spaniard donned an Arizona State football jersey to entice the locals.

Rahm also chipped in during round one on the first hole (his 10th hole of the day) to make birdie and move to even par. He then birdied the next two holes.

Rahm will try over the weekend to become the first amateur to win a PGA TOUR event since fellow Sun Devil Phil Mickelson did it way back in 1991 at the Northern Telecom Open, a tournament which eventually became the Chrysler Classic of Tucson, ending in 2006.
