Match play set at Virginia Senior

SUFFOLK, Virg. (Aug. 29, 2012) -- The whims of Mother Nature continue to affect the schedule of play at the 65th Virginia State Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship being conducted at Cedar Point Country Club. Due to heavy downpours at the course and in eastern Virginia late Tuesday afternoon and into the evening, round two of stroke play qualifying, originally scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 29, was cancelled. As a result, the 32-player match play field was determined by using the 18-hole qualifying scores from stroke play conducted on Tuesday, Aug. 28. The first and second rounds of match play are scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 30. The championship is open to golfers ages 55 and older. All told, the course has taken on more than 14 inches of rainfall over the past four days. “The VSGA appreciates the consideration and understanding of the competitors as well as the incredible efforts and accommodations made by the staff at Cedar Point Country Club as a result of the weather situation,” said VSGA Director of Rules and Competitions Matt Smiley. In stroke play qualifying on Tuesday, Tom Grady, 63, of Marshall and Dave Pulk, 56, of Williamsburg each shot 4-under-par 68 and shared medalist honors. Grady owns the top seed for match play. Defending champion David Partridge, 57, of Manakin (3-under 69 in stroke play qualifying) is the third low qualifier for match play. Virginia Beach residents Alvin Wall, 62, (2-under 70) and Mark Chicoine, 55, (1-under 71) completed the top five seeds. An event rookie, Chicoine was among five competitors to card 1-under 71 in qualifying. At the conclusion of stroke play qualifying, competitors at 4-over 76 or better vied for one spot in the match play field late Wednesday afternoon, with John Casstevens (Glen Allen) advancing to match play. The 67-year-old central Virginian made birdie on the second extra hole, the par-3 ninth, to secure the last spot in match play. In addition to Partridge, two former VSGA Senior Amateur champions made match play – Williamsburg’s Mike McDonald (2009) and Richmond’s John Cuomo (2004). Following the first and second rounds of match play on Thursday, the quarterfinals and semifinals are scheduled for Friday, Aug. 31 and the scheduled 18-hole championship final is on Saturday, Sept. 1.

About the VSGA Senior Amateur

36 holes of stroke play qualifying (18 holes per day); the low 32 players advance to match play. Open to VSGA members who are at least 50 years of age holding an active GHIN number issued by a licensed VSGA Member Club in good standing.
