LA JOLLA, Calif. (July 13, 2012) -- Rico Hoey carries himself like a golfer with a lot of bravado. On Friday, he looked like you-know-who in a bright red shirt for the final round of the Callaway Junior World Champoinships, and he sports large cubic zirconia earrings in each lobe, piercings he’s had since the second grade.
On the surface, he looks like a guy who could win the biggest golf title of his life and still act as if it was just another day at the course.
The impression would be wrong. After dramatically beating well-known junior star Beau Hossler with a birdie on the 18th hole of the Torrey Pines South Course, Hoey buried his face in his bicep and then pulled his shirt over his eyes. The 16-year-old was overcome with emotion.
A couple of minutes later, the Rancho Cucamonga high-schooler tried to talk to reporters and TV cameras and still found it hard to get the words out through the tears.
