STANLEY, NC (July 12, 2012) -- Dawn Woodard of Greer, SC successfully defends her title by defeating Lauren Wearn of Charlotte, NC, 4 & 3. Ironically, Woodard attended Furman University and played on the golf team in the 90's while Wearn is a current member of the women's golf team. "We had an all Furman final today," Woodard said.
Woodard would face a tough opponent in Collins Bradshaw of Columbia, SC in her first match of the day. Woodard was 2-down after 9 holes and Bradshaw would maintain her momentum until she bogeyed #16 and #17 to go back to all square. Both players would par the par 5 18th and would have to go into extra holes to determine a winner. Eventually, Woodard would birdie the 20th hole to advance into the finals.
Wearn would have an easier route into the finals as she defeated medalist Patty Moore of Charlotte, NC by a 7 & 6 margin. Wearn was six-under-par through 12 holes. "I made a lot of putts this morning when I needed to," Wearn said. "Even if I shot 66 again I would still have lost," Moore laughed.
In the final match of the day Woodard made three birdies in the row on #3, #4 and #5 to go 2-up in the match. She would then birdie the 7th to go 3-up but a bogey on the 9th hole would bring Wearn back into the match. Woodard birdied the 10th hole to go back to 3-up after Wearn's putt just slightly missed to halve the hole. Woodard would never let go of her lead from that point on.
Wearn's tee shot on the par 5 15th would go left toward out of bounds and after searching for a few minutes Wearn conceded the hole for Woodard's repeat victory.
