LUFKIN, Texas (May 18, 2012) -- Ideal scoring conditions welcomed the players during the opening round of the 2012 State Four-Ball Championship which is being held at Crown Colony Country Club. Warm temperatures and gentle winds were the only saving grace the player’s received as the course showed its teeth for most of the day. In all only seven teams found themselves under par at the completion of the day with sixteen sitting at even par or better.
Finding their groove early, the team of Christopher Davis (Beaumont) and Ryan Kornmann (Houston) found themselves three under through their first five holes. Closing with a birdie on the par 4 ninth, the team made the turn at four under par. A single bogey was the lone blemish on the card as the team rallied with two late birdies on the back to open with a round of six under par, 66.
Sitting just two shots back heading into tomorrow’s second round are the teams of Randy Lance/David Ward and John Kennedy/Gary Ivans. Lance and Ward were steady through their opening nine holes carding a one under, 35, before making three birdies to close with a four under par, 68. Also carding a 68 was the team of John Kennedy and Gary Ivans who caught fire on their back nine carding three straight birdies on holes four through six. Defending champions John Bearrie and Aaron Hickman find themselves three shots back after posting a three under par, 69.
