Chris Kennedy fires a 2-under par 68 on the Jim McLean Signature Course in Miami, to lead the 94th Florida State Amateur

DORAL, FL (June 23, 2011) -- Chris Kennedy fired a 2-under par 68 on the Jim McLean Signature Course in Miami, to lead the first round at the 94th Florida State Amateur Championship. The Championship continues through Sunday, June 26. Chris Kennedy, of Bradenton, leads the field of 168 by one stroke heading into the second round of play. Kennedy, playing his first round on the Jim McLean Signature Course carded a two-over par 37 on his front nine. After making a par on his 10th hole, Kennedy went on to birdie 2, 5, 7, and 8 for an impressive four-under par 31 on his back nine. Kennedy a past State Champion will play the TPC Blue Monster at Doral on Friday. Kevin Aylwin, of New Smyrna Beach, Joel Dahlenburg, of Saint Augustine, and R J Nakashian, of Palm Beach Gardens, currently sit at one-under par for the championship and are all tied for second place. Seven players currently stand at even par and are tied for fifth place, including the 2010 Florida High School State Individual Champion Collin Engelhardt, of Orlando, and the 2010 Florida Open Champion Ben Vertz, of Coral Springs. The Defending Champion Sean Dale, of Jacksonville, is currently tied for 49th and sits at four-over par. Before reaching the Championship, more than 750 participants attempted to qualify at one of 14 sites across the state. In the Championship, participants will play 18 holes each at the TPC Blue Monster at Doral and the Jim McLean Signature Course on June 23-24. After 36 holes, the field will be cut to the low 70 and ties. The final 36 holes of the Championship will be played at the TPC Blue Monster at Doral on June 25-26. Started in 1914, the Florida Amateur Championship is the oldest continuous sporting event in the state as well as the largest amateur event in Florida. Past Amateur champions include Bob Murphy, Jerry Pate, and PGA Tour players David Peoples, Chris Couch, and Barry Cheesman.
