The U.S. Mid-Amateur winner was named the Southern Golf Association's Amateur of the Month

BIRMINGHAM, ALA (Oct. 31, 2013) – Mike McCoy, 50, has been named the Southern Golf Association’s National Amateur of the Month for October. McCoy, a West Des Moines, IA, insurance executive, became the second oldest champion in the history of the USGA National Mid-Amateur Championship during the month. McCoy, a longtime prominent amateur golfer, won the Mid-Am title at the Country Club of Birmingham, blazing through the his final three matches by decisive margins of 7 and 6, 4 and 3, and 8 and 6 – the last in the 36-hole final against Ohioan Bill Williamson. The Mid-Am, limited to players 25 and older, is typically dominated by players in their 20s and 30s. MCoy has a guilded amateur record, having won numerous amateur events of national note. He is an 11-time winner of Iowa’s amateur golfer of the year title. The victory earns him a spot in the Masters at Augusta National next spring.

The SGA National Am of the Month award is selected by a national, blue-ribbon panel of golf officials, coaches and journalists. This year’s previous winners of the March-thru-October award were Stanford’s Patrick Rodgers, Chinese teen Masters sensation Guan Tianlang, Cal’s Max Homa, Alabama’s Cory Whitsett, Southern Am champ Zachary Olsen, U.S. Am champ Matt Fitzpatrick and Savannah doctor Doug Hanzel. the U.S. Senior Amateur champ. McCoy won the October voting by a wide margin over Alabama senior Troy Mullinax, who won the prestigious Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in Orlando, and Georgia Tech’s Ollie Schneiderjans, who won the U.S. Collegiate Championship at the Country Club of Georgia and missed a playoff at the Brickyard Collegiate by just one stroke, both in October. The coveted award is one of many ways the SGA promotes and advances amateur golf, including its storied Southern Amateur, the 108th playing scheduled next July at the exclusive Honors Course near Chattanooga.
